Since 1969, when the Harlem Karate Institute opened, Dr. Ernest Hyman has taught students the right way to learn self-defense and develop self-confidence. In a spacious DoJo on Third Avenue, the Harlem Karate Institute has helped more than 2500 students learn “Japanese GoJu Ryu Karate Style,” what Dr. Hyman calls “a martial science.” Unlike many karate schools, the Harlem Karate Institute is not in the business of turning out black belts. At some schools, students get their black belts after as few as two years of study. It takes much longer at the Harlem Karate Institute to receive a black belt because Dr. Hyman and his Senseis do not promote students from white to green to purple to brown to black belt unless they show proper respect to, and deep knowledge of, Goju karate. Please explore the various pages of this site to learn more about Dr. Hyman and Japanese GoJu Ryu, and make sure to click the “photos” link to the left to see in-action images from a recent belt-promotion session. Information about enrollment is on the home page. Or call 646-271-0619.
